Bunded tanks – Suitability / Where to use
Bunded tanks are specifically designed to store heating fuels in industrial, commercial, agricultural or institutional environments. The term ‘bunded’ comes from an ancient Persian word meaning ‘dam’ and essentially refers to the fact that it is a double skinned tank – if for any reason the oil holding container was to leak then the second skin would contain any oil and prevent a leak. This means they conply with OFTEC guidelines on non-domestic oil storage.
Bunded tanks can also be used in domestic installations, providing the tank is situated;
- Within 50 metres of a well, borehole or spring.
- Within 10 metres of controlled water e.g. open drain, manhole cover, river, stream or lake.
or
- if the tank’s vent is not visible from its fill point.
- if the capacity exceeds 2500 litres.
- if any potential spillage could run over ground into controlled waters.
